PIP VALUE BASICS

How is pip value calculated?

Pip value connects a currency pair's contract specification with the position size traded. The same one-pip price move is worth more at a larger lot size and less at a smaller one, so pip value is the link between price movement and money.

PIP SIZE×CONTRACT SIZE×LOT SIZE = PIP VALUE
01

What is a pip in forex trading?

A pip is a standardized unit of price movement used across most forex pairs, typically the fourth decimal place. For pairs quoted with two decimals, such as those involving the Japanese yen, the pip sits at the second decimal instead.

02

Why is EUR/USD pip value different from USD/JPY?

Pip size and quote precision are not identical across pairs, and each pair has its own profit currency. Those differences change the resulting pip value even when the lot size and contract size look similar at first glance.

03

How does pip value connect to position sizing and risk?

Multiplying pip value by a stop-loss distance in pips gives the monetary risk of a trade. The MT5 Position Size Calculator works in the other direction. It starts from your chosen risk and stop distance to calculate a lot size.

FAQ

Pip value questions

Clear answers about reference calculations, lot size and currency conversion.

What is pip value in forex trading?

Pip value is the monetary amount that one pip of price movement is worth for a given position size. It depends on the currency pair, the lot size and the account's profit currency.

How do you calculate pip value?

Multiply the pip size by the contract size and by the lot size traded. For a standard 100,000 contract at 1.00 lot with a 0.0001 pip size, one pip is worth 10 units of the pair's profit currency.

Does pip value change with lot size?

Yes. Pip value scales directly with lot size. Doubling the lot size doubles the value of one pip, and a smaller lot reduces it proportionally.

What is the difference between a pip and a point in MT5?

A pip is a standardized price increment used across the market, typically the fourth decimal for most forex pairs. A point is the smallest price increment for a specific broker symbol, which can be a fraction of a pip depending on quote precision.

Why is EUR/USD pip value different from USD/JPY?

Pip size and quote precision differ between pairs, and the profit currency of the pair affects the result. USD/JPY is quoted to two decimals with a larger pip size, which changes the calculation compared with a pair like EUR/USD.

Does this calculator convert between currencies?

No. This reference calculator shows pip value in the pair's own profit currency and only matches that to an account currency when they are the same. Live currency conversion is not included.

Can pip value change during a trade?

For pairs where the account currency differs from the profit currency, the converted pip value can shift with exchange rates. For pairs quoted directly in the account currency, pip value stays fixed for a given lot size.

How does pip value relate to position sizing and risk?

Pip value is a building block for position sizing: multiplying pip value by the stop-loss distance in pips gives the monetary risk for a trade. The MT5 Position Size Calculator uses the same reference specifications to go the other direction, from a chosen risk to a lot size.

Does BTI CONNECT calculate pip value automatically?

BTI CONNECT is built for the actual MT5 workflow, combining symbol data with risk and position sizing before a manual order is placed. It supports user-controlled trading actions rather than placing trades automatically.

Can I use this calculator for metals or indices?

This calculator focuses on standard forex pairs, where the pip convention is well defined. Metals and indices often use point-based or contract-based specifications instead, which this tool does not cover.
